Even Animals Are Filial
In China, during the Qing Dynasty, there was a book entitled Even Animals Are Like That. The book included stories of five filial dogs. There was a man named Chen Gongi who had a dog which gave birth to five puppies. The puppies were given away to his neighbours. During the first year, the dog would visits her puppies. When the puppies saw their mother, they would let their mother eat the food provided by their owners first before eating the food themselves.
After the five puppies had grown bigger, they would go to Chen Gongyi's house to visit their mother. Once when the dog fell sick with a ringworm infection, they licked her until she recovered. When the dog died, Chen Gongi buried her on a hill. The five dogs would go there and make mournful sounds. This went on for some years.
Filial piety is not only about respecting and caring for one's parents, but it is also taking note of one 's speech and behaviour, cultivating good habits, diligently making progress and not doing things that cause anxiety to parents. One must be upright and be a person of good character whom one's parents can be proud of.
